Monkey Pox is a disease resembling smallpox which is also caused by a virus like smallpox.  Fever, chills and long lasting rashes are the common symptoms of monkey pox. The rash takes several weeks to get cleared. Nowadays people know it as M pox. There’s no proper treatment of M pox till date. But it often goes away on its own without any treatment. The one and only way to prevent this disease is to get vaccinated generally even if you’re a healthy person. But if you are at higher risk of developing M pox symptoms,. You should be vaccinated on a regular basis to prevent the disease.

What is Monkey Pox?

Monkey pox which is known as Mpox is a disease caused by a virus. A rash usually appears as the early symptoms of Mpox followed by the appearance of flu-like symptoms. The rash that occurs in Mpox closely resembles the rash that occurs in smallpox.

Mpox is an endemic that affects people everywhere around the world. It is a common disease but the most affected region is Africa. Its outbreaks often spread to other regions of the world equally. Outbreak shows that the cases of Mpox have increased more than the expected number of cases.

Types of Monkey Pox

The two sub-types of Mpox include:

Clade I: This type usually tends to spread in the countries located in Central Africa and also cause severe illnesses. Its outbreaks are often deadly in nature.

Clade ii: Its most affected areas are located in East Africa. In 2022, a global outbreak of clade II had occurred but it was less fatal than clade I.

Popular Outbreaks

In central and East Africa the outbreaks continue to occur in different times of year but the most horrifying and fatal outbreak had occurred in 2023. That was indeed the most deadly outbreak because a large number of people had been affected by this disease.

Similarly, in 2022, there has been a Code II outbreak that has affected a large number of countries around the world .

According to reports, there were around 103,000 cases of clade II Mpox around the world and out of which 20,000 were found in the U.S. before 2022, There was an outbreak in the U.S. in 2003. In that outbreak nearly 50 people in the U.S. States are caught by Mpox disease. But the good thing is that it is not shared from person to person.

Symptoms of Mpox

  • Swollen lymph nodes.
  • Fatigue.
  • Rash like blisters or skin ulcers.
  • Muscle aches.
  • Fever.
  • Chills.
  • Headache.

These are common symptoms that occur when you get affected by Mpox but studies show that it is not necessary to appear all of these symptoms at a time in the affected person. Everyone develops different types of symptoms. There are many ways to experience the symptoms, if they are related to Mpox or not. Some of those are:

  • First appearing flu-like symptoms followed by a rash. However some people never get a rash.
  • Appearance of only rash, no symptoms. Sometimes, other symptoms develop late after a few days.

What Does the Mpox Rash Look Like?

The rash caused by Mpox usually appears on your feet, hands, face, penis, vagina, anus, or ,mouth. The rash often appears in the form of blisters like bumps in a few parts of the body but some people develop widespread rash. The rash goes through several stages and takes four to five weeks to disappear.

Common symptoms of Mpox Rash include:

  • It is usually a flat, red bump at the initial stage but becomes painful over time.
  • Then bumps start to rise and adopt the shape of blisters.
  • The blister fills up with pus.
  • After a few days the crust covers the blister and falls off.

Causes of Mpox

Orthopoxvirus monkey-pox is the causative agent for Mpox. Viruses have a body that contains a small protective coating around DNA(genetic information). The pox virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus family that also causes Smallpox.

How Can Mpox Virus Affect You?

The virus causes Mpox usually spread through:

  • Contact with affected material like towels, clothing and bedding used by a person or animal who’s affected.
  • Direct skinship with Mpox scabs or seizures whether it is an animal or person.
  • Vertical transmission of virus from a pregnant woman to her fetus during pregnancy or at birth.
  • Contact with any type of fluids secretions excreted or released by the infected animal or person including their blood, body fluids, saliva, or respiratory secretions from mouth or nose known as mucus.

Some specific circumstances also boost the spread if doses such as:

  • Skin-to-skin contact.
  • Eating the meat of infected animals.
  • Close direct intimate contact like kissing, cuddling ir sex.
  • Rare cases were also reported where Mpox was spread due to coughing, sneezing or talking very close to others.
  • Scratches or bites from an infected animal.
  • Close direct contact by sharing personal items like ex toys, bedding or towels.

What are the Risk Factors for Mpox?

Mpox virus can affect anyone. It can invade anyone’s body and multiply there.

However, studies show that the data collected after outbreaks around the world had shown that men who have sex with men are most likely to develop the disease.

Another study has revealed that clade II outbreak had affected children less than age 15  in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2022. The affected children were more than half of the total number of affected people there.

However, if you’re a resident of U.S., you are at higher risk of disease exposure of:

  • You have had sex with more than one person in the past six months.
  • You’ve had sex at a location or event where Mpox was spreading.
  • Someone you’ve had sex with in the past one month has been diagnosed with Mpox.
  • You have had sex at sex club, bathhouse or any other commercial sex venue in the past six months.
  • You have a sex partner who’s been in any of the above situations.
  • You have been diagnosed with one or more sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the past six months including HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

The risk of developing Monkey pox symptoms increases when you:

  • Have a weakened immune system especially after receiving HIV.
  • Are pregnant.
  • have a history of eczema.

If your baby is younger than 12 months, you should take care of them because children of this age are at a higher risk of illness due to weak immunity.

Commission complications associated with monkey pox disease include:

  • Peneumonia.
  • Severe scarring.
  • Bacterial infections which often  lead to sepsis.
  • Respiratory dusters when you feel extreme difficulty breathing and getting in oxygen to your body.
  • Loss of vision or damage to the eye due to Mpox ocular infection.
  • Inflammation in your brain (Encephalitis).
  • Inflammation around your heart (Myopericarditis).

Diagnosis and Tests

Diagnosis of Mpox is a complex procedure involving many lab tests. Initially, your healthcare provider swabs two to three sides and sends them to a lab for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Afterwards, some blood tests have also been performed.

If you have already been exposed to Mpox disease, let your healthcare provider know. Your healthcare order tries to check for other illnesses that can cause risk such as chickenpox, smallpox or measles.

Treatment and Management

An antiviral treatment is needed to treat Mpox properly but unfortunately there’s no antiviral drug or treatment option that can do this.

However, healthcare providers struggle to manage the symptoms of patients till last breath. For example, if you’re pregnant and feeling very ill due to Mpox symptoms you should be treated with some antiviral drugs like cidofovir or tecovirimat. They sometimes also recommend you to use vaccinia immuno globulin drug that is a type of antibody treatment.

Although these drugs are approved to treat other viral infections and not the Mpox but they often protect people experiencing Mpox symptoms.

However, researchers are still working on a mission to fund out the effective antiviral drugs or vaccine to get rid of monkey pox virus in future.

What Happens if You Have Mpox?

The usual course for running of Monkey pox is around four to five weeks. But healthcare providers keep you under great care and supervision until the rash disappears.

Can you Survive Mpox?

Outbreaks of Clade II are usually less fatal than Clade I. Studies show that the fertility rate for clade I is usually around 15% but  recent outbreak of clade II in African regions has shown a greater fatality rate that exceeds 15%. Using vaccination and natural drugs before attack of the Mpox virus is the effective way to prevent the disease and manage the symptoms if you get affected with this virus.

How Can You Prevent Mpox?

you can reduce the risk of developing Mpox by getting vaccinated especially if you’re at great risk of exposure to relevant virus. But it is necessary to get vaccination before the outbreak or as soon as possible after exposure.

In addition to vaccines, other ways to prevent exposure and spread of Mpox stress include:

  • Avoid touching Mpox scabs, rashes and blisters.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with social places or situations like parties or clubs, especially if you or another person have a lot of skin exposure.
  • Avoid contact with infected animals or wild animals.
  • Wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose when you’re at rushy places.
  • Avoid contact with bedding or other materials that are in use of others. These things could be contaminated  with Mpox virus.
  • Cook your food thoroughly especially out of contained meat and avoid eating meat of wild animals as they can have exposure with Mpox virus. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Use personal protective equipment like masks and gloves when caring for people having Mpox.
  • Practice safe sex like using dental dams and condoms.

It is also true that you can have Mpox even without knowing about it. Sometimes you don’t show any signs or symptoms of infection, but still spread the infection to others through prolonged and close contact.

How Do You Take Care of Yourself?

Taking care of yourself at home, when you have Mpox is a systematic procedure. You should follow the steps given below to take good care during disease flare.

  • Over-the-Counter Medications (OTC): The first thing you can do to relieve symptoms of disease is to use over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
  • Colloidal Oatmeal Baths: Taking a warm bath with colloidal oatmeal products is another effective method that you can use at home to relieve dry, itchy feelings that come with skin rash.
  • Hydration and Rest: Drinking plenty of fish including juices and electrolytes along with taking rest and stylish at home fir longer can help relieve painful symptoms of Mpox. You should also try hard to stop spreading the disease to others by taking these steps:
  • Isolating Yourself If you’re Infected: Avoid contact with others especially direct contact if you are exposed to infection. Do not make sexual or intimate contact with others until your skin gets healed completely.
  • Wearing a Mask: Always keep wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth. Select N 95 or KN 95 masks can help you in respiration and also prevent your nose or mouth droplets reaching others.
  • Keep the Areas of Sores and Ulcers Covered: You can limit the spreading of disease to these by using bandages or gauze to cover your sores and ulcers.
  • Avoiding Contact with Animals: The disease spreads between animals and humans in the same way. So, avoiding contact with animals (pets and wild) can help you prevent the risk of developing and spreading Mpox.
